About this Course
Legal representation and the practice of law has a seriousness attached to it because lawyers have the ability to change the course of their clients' lives. It is, therefore, imperative that aspiring lawyers have a sound foundation to build on and hone their practice skills.
The practice of law, as it is observed, can appear intimidating and complicated to someone just starting out in the profession. Mistakes made in ignorance can result in lost clients and lost income. As seniors within the professional, we have an ethical obligation towards those who are junior to give them all the practical assistance they need upon entry into the profession.
We also have an obligation to our clients to provide sound legal advice. Since legal representation affects both the layperson and the lawyer responsible, it is critical that, as a larger duty to society, we avail resources to help the next generation of lawyers have a solid grasp of their job.

This course is delivered through the SA Legal Academy online learning campus. The course is divided into 9 modules. In this way you can maintain a work-life balance whilst studying and improving your professional skills. The required effort is 2 hours per module.
The course places a specific emphasis on creating the link between theoretical legal knowledge and legal practice. It encourages the translation of theory into legal skills that help aspiring lawyers truly assist those in need of legal help.

Lecturer
Lisa Thomas is a former criminal defence advocate and in-house counsel in Durban. Lisa has seen the law practice from both sides. She graduated with her LLB, completed her pupillage, and was admitted as an advocate in 2008. Her current area of interest is in alternative dispute resolution, specifically mediation. She is a maverick for humanity and ethics within the legal profession in South Africa with a focus on Candidate Attorneys.
