Traditional leadership approaches are largely grounded in what is known as technical leadership — the application of existing knowledge, expertise, systems, and authority to solve clearly defined problems. While effective in stable environments, technical leadership is insufficient when leaders are faced with uncertainty, competing priorities, shifting expectations, and challenges that require changes in behaviour, mindset, and organisational culture. 

These complex challenges demand adaptive leadership. Adaptive leadership focuses on mobilising people to tackle tough challenges where solutions are not immediately clear and cannot be resolved through authority or expertise alone.

About the presenter   

Liezel van Arkel 

Liezel van Arkel is an experienced organisational development consultant, business strategist and educator. She holds a Bachelor of Law, an Honours degree in Psychology and an MBA (Cum Laude), and has served in senior leadership roles at WorldsView Academy where she is a senior partner specialising in leadership development, change and organisational culture.
