Eviction Law – a South African stalemate

Overview
There are few topics in the legal history of South Africa as contentious and politically sensitive as that of Eviction law. Under the shadow of a depressing and inhumane past with regard to evictions, South African courts are attempting to strike a fine balance between litigants, with due regard to their social and financial standing. This has led to development of the law, not always as decisive or desirable as we might wish, but changes that must be acknowledged and prepared for if legal representatives are to move such matters to successful conclusions.
Advocate Dwight Snyman will provide a practical guide to litigation of eviction proceedings, where the law of evictions came from and where we now stand, common pitfalls and procedural impediments and how to overcome them, as well as a general theoretical framework to help understand how best to prosecute and defend potential evictions.

About the Presenter
Dwight is an admitted member of the Johannesburg Society of Advocates and is accredited by the Legal Practitioners Council as an Advocate of the High Court of South Africa.
Before being called to the Bar, Dwight completed articles of clerkship, and attorney’s competency exams under the auspices of the Wits Law Clinic. He completed his Advocacy pupillage under the tutelage of the esteemed Adv. Louis Du Bruyn.
Though still junior within the profession, Dwight has had opportunity and success in litigation, in the High and Magistrates’ Courts of the republic, the CCMA, Disciplinary Hearings and assorted other venues and forums, and has become possessed of practical litigation experience beyond what would normally be expected from a practitioner of his age and seniority.
