ABALONE PROTECTION AREA TO BE EXTENDED?

The Department of Forestry, Fisheries & the Environment has called for input by 7 August 2023 on proposals that, if adopted, could significantly extend the coastal area in which wild abalone are protected.

According to a map of what is envisaged, the existing no-dive area (beginning at Gansbaai Harbour and ending at Quion Point) would be extended to Struisbaai Harbour. Regulations in force since 2008 under the Marine Living Resources Act, 1998, would be amended accordingly.
