AIR QUALITY MANAGEMENT PLANS: DRAFT REGULATIONS OUT FOR COMMENT

The Department of Forestry, Fisheries & the Environment has gazetted draft regulations on air quality management plans for input by 16 June 2024. Focusing on approved management plans for priority areas, once in force the proposed new regulations will:

  • make the implementation of certain interventions mandatory
  • provide for mechanisms enabling government to monitor and evaluate a plan’s effectiveness
  • enable the activation of enforcement measures where non-compliance is identified, and will
  • apply to:
    • all ‘key stakeholders’ found to be ‘significant contributors’ to poor air quality (including government institutions and entities)
    • mining operations
    • listed activities, and
    • controlled emitters.
