ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES TAX: MORE TIME TO COMMENT ON DISCUSSION PAPER

National Treasury has issued a media statement extending the deadline for comment on an alcoholic beverages tax discussion paper, which was released on 13 November 2024. The new deadline is 14 February 2025.

Among other things, the paper explores the potential long-term use of minimum unit pricing – informed by a policy review. This is noting the health risks associated with alcohol abuse, with heavy episodic drinking having apparently become a ‘significant ‘ problem in South Africa.

The discussion paper was one of three published simultaneously. As SA Legal Academy reported at the time, the others focus on Phase 2 of the carbon tax and the tax treatment of collective investment schemes. As far as can be ascertained, the deadline for input on the other two papers has not been extended and remains 13 December 2024.
