ANTI-TERRORISM BILLS LEAVE PARLIAMENT

Parliament has completed its work on two pieces of anti-terrorism legislation, which are now awaiting the President’s signature. They are the General Laws (Anti-Money Laundering & Combating Terrorism Financing) Amendment Bill, and the Protection of Constitutional Democracy Against Terrorist & Related Activities Amendment Bill. A ‘B’ version of each Bill was passed by the NCOP on 13 December 2022 during its final sitting for the year.

Reports compiled by each NCOP committee concerned were tabled in the House on 12 December, members having worked around the clock to conduct the necessary public hearings. No changes were made to either Bill.

Once operationalised, the new legislation is expected to address most concerns raised by the international Financial Action Task force, which has yet to determine whether South Africa should be grey listed.
