According to a notice unceremoniously published by the Department of Communications & Digital Technologies on 25 October 2024 in the margin of its website under ‘current affairs’ (and including a dysfunctional link), input is sought by 29 November on a national policy framework for artificial intelligence (AI). Perhaps the notice is referring to a document released on 14 August 2024, according to Werksman’s attorney Wendy Rosenberg. At the time, the deadline for input was 30 September.
Whatever the case, the absence of a media statement or Government Gazette notice calling for submissions tends either to point to gross negligence or a clandestine approach confining the public consultation process to a select few. The process began with another document unceremoniously released in April 2024 – dated October 2023 and focusing on AI ‘planning’, as SA Legal Academy reported at the time.
