ASTRO TOURISM: DRAFT STRATEGY GAZETTED FOR PUBLIC COMMENT

Following Cabinet’s recent approval of a draft astro tourism strategy and implementation plan for public consultation, the document has been gazetted by the Department of Tourism for stakeholder input. The deadline for comment is 27 October 2024.

According to a media statement on the Cabinet meeting concerned, the draft strategy’s overarching objective is ‘to position South Africa as a world-class astro-tourism destination’ – thus diversifying the country’s tourism offerings, ‘boosting’ economic development and creating opportunities for tourism sector employment.

Among other things, the document’s executive summary refers to three ‘pillars’ around which the strategy will be implemented, monitored and evaluated:

  • ‘indigenous celestial narratives’ and associated ‘human capacity development’ interventions
  • infrastructure development (related to which the draft strategy mentions support for dark sky conservation and light pollution awareness campaigns), and
  • ‘inclusive tourism growth and partnerships’.
