BANNED INDUSTRIAL CHEMICALS: EXEMPTED USES GAZETTED

The Department of Forestry, Fisheries & the Environment has gazetted a notice listing applications of Dechlorane Plus and UV-328 for which exemptions may be sought in the context of their status as persistent organic pollutants targeted for ‘elimination’.

Both industrial chemicals are listed in Annexure A of the Stockholm Convention, which prohibits their production and use other than in certain circumstances for which the parties concerned are required to register.

Dechlorane Plus is mainly used as a flame retardant in adhesives, sealants and polymers, as well as in greases as an ‘extreme pressure additive’ (European Chemicals Agency).

UV-328 is used, among other things, in the manufacture of plastics and certain types of coatings as a light stabiliser (Wikipedia).
