Contentious provisions in the Basic Education Laws Amendment Act are still under consideration by Government of National Unity (GNU) party representatives in a sub-committee expressly established by the GNU clearing house mechanism to find a way forward.
This was confirmed in a Presidency media statement among other things distancing the GNU from recommendations apparently emerging from a ‘parallel’ process recently reported in the media and apparently not ‘sanctioned’ by all parties to the GNU Statement of Intent.
The sub-committee is expected to table its recommendations at the next meeting of the GNU clearing house mechanism, a date for which has yet to be announced. Meanwhile, more information is available in the October 2024 SA Legal Academy report to which a link is provided below.
