BIODIVERSITY CONSERVATION: INPUT SOUGHT ON DRAFT STRATEGY, ACTION PLAN

The Department of Forestry, Fisheries & the Environment has gazetted a draft revised 10-year National Biodiversity Strategy & Action Plan for public comments by 4 September 2026. This is in keeping with international obligations in the context of new global goals and targets underpinning the 1992 Convention on Biological Diversity, to which South Africa is signatory.

As the country’s ‘primary instrument’ for implementing Convention imperatives at national level, the draft revised strategy and plan set out a vision, targets and actionable measures for ‘conserving and sustainably using’ South Africa’s rich biodiversity in the context of prevailing circumstances and capabilities. This is according to a covering notice, which also draws attention to a ‘shift towards a whole-of-government, whole-of-society approach’ as compared with the previous ten-year iteration.
