BIODIVERSITY MANAGEMENT: INPUT SOUGHT ON DRAFT PLAN FOR SHARKS

The Department of Forestry, Fisheries & the Environment has called for input by 2 July 2023 on a draft biodiversity management plan for sharks. Once finalised, it will replace one operationalised in 2015, which was apparently ‘the first attempt at a comprehensive plan for shark conservation’.

Adopting a more ‘succinct and directed approach’, the draft revised plan focuses on:

  • shark tourism
  • spatial management and protection
  • species protection, and
  • compliance and enforcement.

The notice calling for public comments was gazetted on 2 June 2023 – without the document itself, which is nevertheless attached to an identical notice published on the department’s website three days later.
