BIODIVERSITY MANAGEMENT: MULTI-SPECIES VULTURE PLAN GAZETTED

The Department of Forestry, Fisheries & the Environment has published a multi-species biodiversity management plan for South Africa’s vultures. According to the accompanying Government Gazette notice, the plan covers the geographic ranges of all nine vulture species found in the country – with a special focus on seven resident breeding species, thee of which are critically endangered.

Underpinned by the White Paper on the conservation and sustainable use of South Africa’s biodiversity, the plan was developed in consultation with all relevant stakeholders, including traditional health practitioners. Apparently, poisoning poses the greatest threat to African vultures – a method used not only to harvest their body parts for the traditional medicine trade, but also to reduce the visibility of poaching-related animal carcasses.
