BIODIVERSITY MANAGEMENT: REQUIEM SHARK, SEA CUCUMBER CITES LISTING UPDATE

The requiem shark is now protected under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna & Flora (CITES). This is according to a notice recently gazetted by the Department of Forestry, Fisheries & the Environment.

Added to CITES Appendix II during last year’s conference of parties to the convention, the requiem shark assumed protected status on 25 November 2023. As a result, trade in this family of species will be closely controlled. ‘Targeted by the fin market’, most types of requiem shark are on the International Union for Conservation of Nature ‘red list’ of endangered species (The Guardian).

Also added to CITES Appendix II during last year’s CITES conference of parties, the sea cucumber will assume protected status on 25 May 2025. Being highly nutritious, it is harvested as a food source popular in Asian and Middle Eastern countries (Traffic).
