BIODIVERSITY MANAGEMENT: REVISED AFRICAN GERANIUM PLAN GAZETTED

The Department of Forestry, Fisheries & the Environment has gazetted a revised biodiversity management plan for the African geranium (pelargonium sidoides). This is noting that the plant’s tuberous roots are harvested in the wild for phytomedicine manufacturing locally and internationally, as well as for traditional medicine.

Released in draft form in November 2024 for public comment, the revised plan repeals one in place since April 2023. Its overarching objectives include ensuring:

  • the protection of customary rights to the species for traditional medicinal purposes
  • compliance with benefit-sharing legislation, and
  • the advancement of community participation and empowerment in the harvesting process.
