BLACK & WHITE RHINO MANAGEMENT: REVISED DECADEL PLAN GAZETTED

The Department of Forestry, Fisheries & the Environment has gazetted a revised decadal biodiversity management plan for the white and black rhino. This follows the release of a draft plan in June 2024 for public comment, as SA Legal Academy reported at the time.

‘Consolidating previous policy and planning work on rhino management into a single integrated tool’, the revised plan is underpinned by a strategic approach towards:

  • engaging ‘range states to the north’
  • promoting a ‘whole-of-society’ interest in curbing rhino poaching, and
  • facilitating the species’ inclusive, sustainable conservation and use.

This is noting the overarching objectives of government’s September 2023 policy position on the conservation and sustainable use of elephant, lion, leopard and rhinoceros, which include:

  • equitable access and benefit sharing, and
  • transformation.
