At the request of the Department of Trade, Industry & Competition, the International Trade Administration Commission (ITAC) has gazetted a draft ministerial trade policy directive intended to limit ‘the proliferation of weapons that can be easily repurposed or misused’. The deadline for public comments is 2 June 2025.
According to the accompanying ITAC notice, the draft trade policy directive ‘outlines the minimum regulatory requirements … (to) be met by individuals or entities seeking … permits for the importation of blank guns into South Africa’.
The alternative would be a complete ban on blank gun imports, which would impact negatively on their legitimate use for police and military training, by private security firms and in film production among other things.
