CAPTIVE LION INDUSTRY EXIT PROGRAMME: REGISTRATION OPENS

The Department of Forestry, Fisheries & the Environment has gazetted a notice giving captive lion industry breeders until 14 May 2023 to register for participation in the department’s voluntary exit programme.

This is noting:

  • various exit ‘options and pathways’ identified by a ministerial task team appointed in December 2022 to address issues specific to the captive lion industry, and that
  • registering to participate in the voluntary exit programme ‘does not constitute any obligation to proceed’ with exiting the industry.

According to a media statement issued last year on the task team’s responsibilities, they included an audit of industry facilities to determine:

  • the number of lions held in captivity
  • their age and sex
  • the number of lion part and derivative stockpiles in existence
  • the type of practices associated with each facility
  • the number of employees at each facility
  • their employment levels and skills, and
  • potential alternative land use options ‘within the biodiversity economy’.
