PLEASE NOTE: On 7 July 2023, the Department of Home Affairs withdrew and replaced the regulations in this report. Please click this link for the latest information.

The Department of Home Affairs has gazetted amendments to regulations in place since December 2012 under the South African Citizenship Act, 1995. Now in force, the amendments make substantive changes to provisions affecting naturalisation.

Among other things, they:

  • reduce the period of ordinary residence required of a naturalisation applicant from ten to five years, nevertheless
  • inserting a long list of other requirements to be met, which are reflected in a new application form attached as an annexure to the notice.
