CLIMATE CHANGE: FIVE-YEAR SECTORAL EMISSION TARGETS OUT FOR COMMENT

The Department of Forestry, Fisheries & the Environment has gazetted a notice calling for input by 25 June 2024 on a draft document proposing sector-specific carbon emissions targets for the five-year period beginning in 2025. The targets envisaged are:

  • underpinned by the White Paper on South Africa’s climate change response, and
  • in line with the Minister’s obligations in terms of clause 22 of the recently passed Climate Change Bill (sectoral emission targets).

According to the document’s executive summary, once finalised it is expected to assist the government departments responsible for sector-specific policy implementation to ensure that nationally determined contributions towards climate change mitigation are achieved. This is noting goals set in the 2019 Integrated Resource Plan and its next iteration, a draft of which was released in January 2024 for public comment.
