The Department of Forestry, Fisheries & the Environment has called for comments by 17 September 2023 on a draft biennial update report prepared in terms of UN Framework Convention on Climate Change requirements.
The document includes the national greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory 2000 – 2020, which reflects:
- an increase in energy and waste-related emissions
- a decline in emissions from industrial process and product use, as well as from agriculture, forestry and other land use
- an increase in waste-related emissions, and
- an overall increase in land carbon sink, which is attributed to intensified reforestation efforts and reduced fuelwood collection and biomass burning.
According to the draft report:
- mitigation actions have contributed towards keeping South Africa’s GHG emission trajectory within a peak-plateau-and-decline range set in 2015, and
- the web-based National Climate Change Information System tracking and analysis platform is now fully operational, and progress has been made in institutionalising the system provincially.
