COMPENSATION FOR OCCUPATIONAL INJURIES & DISEASES AMENDMENT BILL SIGNED INTO LAW

The Compensation for Occupational Injuries & Diseases Amendment Bill, 2020, has been signed into law, according to a Presidency media statement issued on 6 April 2023. However, at the time of writing the new statute had yet to be gazetted. As a result, it is not clear when it is expected to come into effect.

Among other things, a ‘B’ version of the Bill passed by Parliament in September 2022:

  • remedies the unconstitutional exclusion of private domestic workers from receiving compensatory benefits under the Act, and
  • introduces a multi-disciplinary employee-based process of rehabilitating and reintegrating employees injured at the workplace or affected by occupational diseases.
