CONSERVATION: SANPARKS LAUNCHES VISION 2040

‘The main aim of Vision 2040 is to promote social justice and inclusivity by guaranteeing that all communities, particularly the disadvantaged and marginalised … have fair access to opportunities and resources and that conservation is a catalyst for growth, … prosperity and the betterment of people’s livelihoods’. This is according to Forestry, Fisheries & the Environment Deputy Minister Narend Singh, whose speech at the launch of Vision 2040 referred to it as part of South Africa’s ‘deliberate contribution’ towards meeting the 23 action-oriented global decadal targets set in 2020 at the UN’s Kunming Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework Convention.

Setting out ‘pathways to the future of conservation’, the document itself describes the SanParks vision for 2040 as a ‘shift’ from islands of conservation excluding people to ‘expansive, connected stretches of land … where both nature and people thrive’. In that context, the Deputy Minister spoke of prioritising the creation of ‘mega living landscapes’ balancing human development with the preservation of natural ecosystems.

Vision 2040 is underpinned by the 2015-2025 National Biodiversity Strategy & Action Plan.
