CONSUMER GOODS & SERVICES: INPUT SOUGHT ON DRAFT STANDARD CODE OF CONDUCT

The Department of Trade, Industry & Competition has gazetted a draft standard code of conduct to be used by industry-specific consumer goods and service organisations developing their own. The deadline for input is 23 June 2025.

This is noting that, in terms of the 2008 Consumer Protection Act, the purpose of establishing an industry-specific ombud and developing a code of conduct is to:

  • raise standards of good conduct ‘without endangering’ business ‘vitality and growth’
  • ‘generate’ industry growth by increasing certainty levels for all stakeholders and participants
  • promote compliance with the Act its implementation
  • provide guidance on fair business practice when operating within the industry
  • educate consumers on their rights, as well as the redress available should the Act or code be breached, and
  • provide for alternative dispute resolution measures prescribed in the Act’s section 82(6).
