The NCOP Committee on Security & Justice has called for written submissions by 10 November 2023 on the Correctional Services Amendment Bill, which was tabled in June 2023 and passed by the National Assembly three months later.
The Bill’s overarching objective is to remedy defects in sections 88A(1)(b) and 91 of the principal Act – in line with a December 2020 Constitutional Court judgment on their failure to provide ‘an adequate level of independence to the Judicial Inspectorate for Correctional Services’.
In addition, once in force the amendments will strengthen provisions in the Act intended to ensure ‘conditions of human dignity’ for everyone held in custody.
