CORRECTIONAL SERVICES AMENDMENT BILL OPENED FOR WRITTEN SUBMISSIONS

In anticipation of public hearings on the Correctional Services Amendment Bill, the National Assembly’s Justice & Correctional Services Committee has called for written submissions by 14 July 2023. This is according to a notice published by the Parliamentary Monitoring Group (PMG) and later posted on Parliament’s own website.

Among other things, the recently tabled Bill:

  • responds to a December 2020 Constitutional Court ruling declaring sections 88A(1)(b) and 91 of the principal Act invalid ‘to the extent that they fail to provide an adequate level of independence to the Judicial Inspectorate for Correctional Services’, and
  • seeks to make further provision for ‘the custody of all inmates under conditions of human dignity’.
