COURT RULES: INPUT SOUGHT ON DRAFT AMENDMENTS AFFECTING PLEA TIMEFRAMES

The Rules Board for Courts of Law has called for input by 31 July 2025 on proposed amendments to certain Magistrates’ Courts Rules and corresponding Uniform Rules of Court affecting plea timeframes.

According to a backdated notice posted on the Department of Justice & Constitutional Development website, the changes envisaged seek to ensure that ‘the time period within which to furnish a plea or any other pleading is not interrupted whilst a response is awaited from a plaintiff to whom a notice in terms of the rules has been delivered’.

The Rules Board correspondence concerned is dated 9 July 2025, while the departmental notice has been backdated to 10 July 2025.
