CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: PARLIAMENTARY INVESTIGATION BEGINS

An ad hoc committee established by the National Assembly in July 2025 to investigate the ‘veracity and implications’ of allegations recently made by Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi has called for written submissions on matters pertinent to the scope of its work. This is according to a notice and media statement published on Parliament’s website. A website page dedicated to the investigation refers to the allegations as ‘wide-ranging’, with implications for ‘security matters’.

As SA Legal Academy has already reported, the investigation is running parallel to a judicial inquiry into criminality, political interference and corruption in the criminal justice system, chaired by Judge Mbuyiseli Madlanga:

According to the committee notice:

  • only submissions relevant to the scope of the parliamentary investigation will be considered
  • the scope of the investigation is set out in the committee’s terms of reference, and
  • the deadline for submissions is 17 October 2025.
