CRIMINAL & RELATED MATTERS AMENDMENT ACT, 2021, COMES INTO FORCE

The President has set Friday 5 August 2022 as the commencement date of the 2021 Criminal & Related Matters Amendment Act. Among other things, the Act prohibits the release on bail before a first court appearance of anyone accused of domestic violence. Where the court then considers releasing the accused on bail, the Act requires certain procedures to be followed with the aim of ensuring the safety of the alleged victim.
