Please note: On 10 December 2024, the Act was gazetted. Most of the new statute is now in force, as explained below.
The Presidency has issued a media statement announcing that the 2022 Deeds Registries Amendment Bill has been signed into law. Although, at the time of writing, the Act itself had yet to be gazetted, once published most of its provisions will immediately become effective. This is according to the Bill’s clause 14 (short title and commencement).
Clause 14 nevertheless requires the commencement of certain sub-sections to be separately proclaimed. The same applies to amendments to the recently commenced Electronic Deeds Registration Systems Act, which are listed in a schedule to the Bill.

Against that backdrop, the overarching objective of the Deeds Registries Amendment is to enhance the administration and registration of deeds. Largely technical in nature, the Act also strengthens provisions in the principal statute dealing with matters of governance.
