DIGITAL MIGRATION: ANALOGUE SWITCH-OFF UPDATE

The Department of Communications & Digital Technologies has issued a media statement on the details of a two-step approach to the remaining phase of digital migration. This is noting progress already made in ‘switching-off the analogue network countrywide’.

According to the statement:

  • on 31 July 2023, all analogue services above the 694MHz band will be switched off, and
  • on 31 December 2024, all analogue services below the 694MHz band will cease – ending a prolonged period of dual illumination.

Adopted after extensive stakeholder consultation, the two-step approach will release more high-demand spectrum for other telecommunications use – nevertheless allowing sufficient time for ‘key stakeholders’ to ‘recover from post-COVID economic decline and load-shedding impact’.
