DISABILITY ASSISTANCE ANIMALS: DA PREPARES LEGISLATION ON ACCESS TO PUBLIC FACILITIES

Democratic Alliance MP Wendy Alexander has announced her intention to develop and table a Performing Animals Protection Amendment Bill to facilitate access to private and public areas, buildings and transport for people dependent on assistance animals.

Among other things, the Bill envisaged will seek to:

  • provide for an assistance animals licensing system, and
  • make it an offence to prohibit assistance animals and their owners from using the facilities automatically available to others.

To that end, Alexander has gazetted an explanatory summary of the proposed new piece of legislation, calling for suggestions from interested and affected parties on its contents.

The deadline for input has been set at 15 July 2023.
