The Department of Home Affairs has called for input by 30 June 2023 on a draft National Identification & Registration Bill.
Once in force, among other things it will:
- introduce ‘a single, inclusive and integrated national identification system’
- include in that system permanent residents and ‘foreigners who sojourn temporarily’ in South Africa, and
- provide for:
- ‘the compilation and maintenance of a population register and identification database’
- ‘the assignment of national identity numbers and reference numbers’, and
- ‘the issuance of national identity cards and temporary identity, deaths, births and marriage certificates’.
