The South African Institute for Drug-Free Sport Amendment Act came into force on 5 August 2024, when a presidential proclamation to that effect was gazetted.
This ends a crisis precipitated by the institute’s apparently lackadaisical approach to addressing World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) concerns about South Africa’s non-compliance with an international code in place since 1 January 2021. As regularly reported at the time, missing WADA’s May 2023 deadline for aligning the Act with international requirements threatened to cast a dark cloud over South Africa’s stellar performance in the 2023 rugby world cup tournament. The blunder also created unnecessary uncertainty about the country’s eligibility to compete in several other international sports events, including the Olympics now under way.
Eventually tabled in Parliament in November 2023, the Bill was passed in May 2024 and signed into law the following month.
