DUST CONTROL: REGULATORY AMENDMENTS OUT FOR COMMENT

The Department of Forestry, Fisheries & the Environment has called for input by 7 April 2024 on draft amendments to regulations on dust control prescribed under the National Environmental Management: Air Quality Act, 2004.

Once finalised and operationalised, among other things the amendments are expected to improve the implementation and effectiveness of dust management plans. Applicable to mining and other listed activities – as well as to the management of large stockpiles of potentially dust-generating material – the amended regulations will repeal and replace those in force since November 2013.

To that end, the proposed amendments:

  • define activities to which the regulations apply, and
  • update the standard test method for collecting and measuring dust fall.
