The National Assembly’s Transport Committee has gazetted a draft Economic Regulation of Transport Amendment Bill for comment by 22 January 2025. Prepared by the committee itself, the draft Bill’s purpose is to correct a date in the Act’s Schedule 1 in order to ‘eliminate any possible interpretation challenges’ that might require an intervention from the courts.
Not yet operationalised, the Economic Regulation of Transport Act joined the statute books in June 2024 and provides for the establishment of two parallel independent but integrated agencies to regulate all rail, aviation, maritime and road transport. One agency will focus on technical, administrative and enforcement matters; the other will serve as an adjudicative entity.
