EFF TABLES BILL ON RELOCATING PARLIAMENT

EFF leader Julius Malema has tabled a private member's Bill in the National Assembly proposing that Parliament be relocated to Tshwane. Not only, in his party's view, would this address concerns about the cost of regularly transporting members and government officials between Cape Town and their homes elsewhere in the country.

The EFF believes the move would also make Parliament more accessible to ordinary South Africans.

Private members' Bills rarely pass the desirability test at committee level. In this case, the process will be influenced by the results of the most recent feasibility study on the socio-economic impact of moving Parliament to Gauteng. They have yet to be revealed or publicly debated and will need to be considered in the context of the costs associated with refurbishing buildings damaged in the January 2022 fire.
