Please note: Two days after gazetting the amendments, the authority issued a media statement giving them context.

The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa has gazetted it most recent amendments to the 2014 political party broadcasting and advertising regulations.

Released in draft form in October 2023 for public comment, the revised amendments are immediately effective. Among other things, they have implications for:

  • independent candidates contesting national and provincial elections
  • the procedures to be followed and timeframes applicable when:
    • applying for an election-related broadcast or advertisement, and
    • when an application is rejected
  • timeslots, and
  • procedures to be followed after a transmission breakdown.
