ELECTORAL ACT: IEC CALLS FOR INPUT ON TWO SETS OF REGULATORY PROPOSALS

The Independent Electoral Commission has called for public comments on draft amendments to regulations under the Electoral Act, 1998, as well as changes to the deposits required when contesting elections. Input should be made respectively by 18 and 27 August 2023.

Independent candidates are included in the table reflecting proposed changes to the amounts required as deposits when contesting elections. The sums envisaged are significantly lower than those for political parties.

Proposed amendments to the Electoral Act regulations tend not to be substantive. However, it is mooted that objections to voting or vote counting procedures should be lodged by way of a sworn statement reflecting the information required.
