ELECTORAL AMENDMENT BILL: FINAL OPPORTUNITY TO COMMENT

The National Assembly’s Home Affairs Committee has issued a notice calling for comments by 27 January 2023 on changes to the Bill made by the NCOP. These are explained in the committee notice.

Among other things, they:

  • address a disparity between the number of signatures of support required by an independent candidate and a political party
  • rectify the forfeiture calculation
  • amend the calculation formula used when a candidate is required to choose between taking a seat in the National Assembly or a provincial legislature
  • address a flaw in the method used to protect seats that become vacant after an election, and
  • introduce a new clause establishing an Electoral Reform Consultation Panel as an interim measure after the 2024 elections.
