ELECTORAL AMENDMENT BILL READY TO BE PASSED BY THE NATIONAL ASSEMBLY

A 'B' version of the Electoral Amendment Bill is expected to be passed by the National Assembly on 20 October and sent to the NCOP for concurrence. This is according to a backdated Department of Home Affairs media statement also clarifying the Bill's sole intention. Its purpose is to give effect to a June 2020 Constitutional Court judgment by allowing independent candidates to contest elections 'in their own right and not necessarily representing political parties'.
