The National Assembly’s Home Affairs Committee has called for written submissions by 2 February 2024 on the recently tabled Electoral Matters Amendment Bill. This is probably in anticipation of a first round of parliamentary hearings when committees reconvene after the long festive season recess.
According to a memorandum on the Bill’s objects, once passed, enacted and operationalised it will align various statutes with amendments to the Electoral Act providing for independent candidates to contest elections and, if successful, occupy seats in the National Assembly and provincial legislatures.
