The Electoral Matters Amendment Bill’s ‘B’ version is ready to be passed by the National Assembly and sent to the NCOP for concurrence. This is according to a report recently tabled in the House by its Home Affairs Committee.
The Bill’s overarching objective is to align various pieces of legislation with the Electoral Amendment Act, 2023, which enables independent candidates to contest elections for seats in the National Assembly and provincial legislatures.
Most of the Bill’s clauses focus on amendments to the Political Party Funding Act, 2018, with the intention of providing for ‘the regulation of the private and public funding of independent candidates and independent representatives’.
