The National Energy Regulator of South Africa has called for input by 26 June 2026 on a wholesale price methodology consultation paper.
Its purpose is to:
- ‘establish a transparent and regulated wholesale pricing structure’ that:
- ‘enables the effective operation of the future wholesale electricity market’
- ‘ensures (the) recovery of regulated and unavoidable system costs’, and
- ‘provides a clear and consistent transitional interface between regulated components and emerging market-based elements in the early stages of … market liberalisation’, and to
- ‘support the shift from a vertically integrated system towards a more competitive market structure over time’.
This is noting:
‘the transitional context’ in which the wholesale market now operates, and
- the methodology’s function not only as ‘pricing tool’ but also as a ‘key enabler of broader market reform’.
