ELECTRICITY PRICING: REVISED POLICY OUT FOR COMMENT

The Department of Electricity & Energy has gazetted a draft revised electricity pricing policy – calling for input by 27 September 2026.

According to the document’s introductory section, the purpose of the revised pricing poliy is to ‘establish a coherent, transparent, and forward-looking pricing framework aligned with the restructured electricity sector’. To that end, the draft revised policy:

• provides the basis for ‘cost-reflective and efficient pricing across the electricity value chain’
• seeks to ‘ensure transparent, predictable, and non-discriminatory tariff structures’
• ‘support(s) the transition to an unbundled and competitive electricity market’
• seeks to enable sustainable, efficient investment in generation, transmission and distribution infrastructure, and
• promotes the efficient operation of South Africa’s electricity sector.

This is noting government’s ongoing commitment to facilitating equitable access to affordable electricity across all sectors of society.
