ELECTRICITY REGULATION AMENDMENT ACT IN FORCE FROM 1 JANUARY 2025

The Electricity Regulation Amendment Act will be in force from 1 January 2025, according to a recently gazetted presidential proclamation. This heralds the imminent commencement of a five-year process culminating in the Transmission System Operator SOC Ltd’s formal establishment as an independent company and ‘custodian of the national grid’.

As SA Legal Academy has already reported, overall the Act is expected to:

  • ‘respond to current realities in the electricity sector’
  • ‘open up pathways to greater competition and reduced energy costs’,
  • facilitate the ‘more rapid uptake of renewable energy sources’, and
  • ‘increase investment in new generation capacity to achieve energy security’.
