The Department of Electricity & Energy has gazetted and called for input on an electricity sector market transformation position paper setting out a ‘clear vision’ for the sector and the role envisaged for each stakeholder in a ‘transformed energy system’. The deadline for comment is 20 September 2026.
Underpinned by National Development Plan (NDP) 2030 objectives, the paper unpacks market transformation in the context of an ongoing ‘energy quadrilemma’ requiring government to simultaneously address:
This is according to the document’s introductory section – giving context to interventions already under way for introducing a competitive wholesale electricity market as ‘the next step in the transformation process’. Decarbonisation and electricity distribution are explored with that in mind, notwithstanding the need for improved ‘technical and financial performance’.
