ELECTRICITY SUPPLY CONSTRAINTS: STATE OF DISASTER LIFTED

The Department of Co-operative Governance & Traditional Affairs has gazetted notices:

  • revoking the classification of South Africa’s ‘severe energy supply constraints’ as a national disaster
  • lifting the ensuing state of disaster declaration, and
  • repealing ‘all regulations and directions’ issued in that context.

According to a media statement on the decision, ‘government will, through the Energy Crisis Committee, continue to engage, co-operate and co-ordinate its actions to reduce and eradicate load shedding using existing legislation and contingency arrangements’. These include:

  • ‘a range of interventions and support measures introduced by departments as an accelerated response at the time the state of disaster was declared’, and
  • ‘measures already taken to protect critical infrastructure, facilitate emergency energy generation and protect consumers in terms of (the) relevant competition law’.
