ELECTRONIC COMMUNICATIONS, IMT ROADMAP 2026: INPUT SOUGHT ON THREE DOCUMENTS

The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa has published and called for input on three documents intended to support the implementation of International Mobile Telecommunications (IMT) Roadmap 2026. This is noting that, according to an accompanying media statement:

• the roadmap provides ‘a long-term framework for the planning, management and assignment of (the) radio frequency spectrum required for current and future generations of mobile broadband, including IMT-2030 technologies’
• ‘a key component of the roadmap is the planned deployment of additional IMT frequency bands identified in the International Telecommunication Union … Radio Regulations (2024 Edition)’ , and that
• ‘these frequency bands are essential for supporting (a) growing demand for mobile broadband services and achieving the national objective of broadband for all’.

The proposals on which public comments are now sought are:

• draft radio frequency spectrum assignment plans ‘for various IMT bands’ (deadline for input 11 September 2026)
• related feasibility studies (deadline for input 4 September 2026), and
• exclusive geographic areas for radio frequency spectrum assignment plans for various mmWave IMT bands (deadline for input 4 September 2026).

ICASA plans to implement the roadmap ‘over the next five to ten years’.
